Ancala: Guard-Gated Living in the McDowell Mountain Foothills
What is Ancala like?
Ancala is a guard-gated community of about 850 acres in the McDowell Mountain foothills of Scottsdale. It's known for its golf course, its sense of privacy and its views of the McDowells, Camelback and city lights. It feels tucked away, yet Loop 101 and everyday conveniences are only minutes from the gate.
Where is Ancala located?
Ancala sits off Via Linda between 114th and 124th Streets in Scottsdale, ZIP 85259. The main gate is at 118th Street and Via Linda, a west gate is off Frank Lloyd Wright and Cactus, and an east gate is near the Lost Dog Wash trailhead into the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Nearby neighborhoods include McDowell Mountain Ranch and Windgate Ranch.
What kinds of homes are in Ancala?
Ancala offers single-family homes across several neighborhoods, from homes along the golf course to larger estate-style properties on the hillsides with big views. Styles and sizes vary by neighborhood and street, so the best approach is to tour a few pockets and see what feels right. I'm happy to put together a short list for you.
What is golf and club life like at Ancala?
Ancala Country Club is a privately owned club inside the community. Its 18-hole, par-72 championship course was designed by Perry Dye and plays 6,815 yards from the back tees, with five sets of tees. The club opened in 1990 and also offers tennis, a pool, a fitness center, dining and member events. Owning a home in Ancala does not automatically make you a member. Membership is separate, with golf and social options. More on golf neighborhoods on my golf community living page.
Is Ancala gated, and is there an HOA?
Yes. Ancala is guard-gated with three entrances. The main gate is staffed 24/7, the west gate is staffed Monday through Saturday during daytime hours, and residents use registered vehicle transponders. The Ancala Homeowners Association maintains the private roads and a community park with grassy play areas, a basketball court and picnic space. I'll confirm current HOA dues for any home you consider.
Which schools serve Ancala?
Ancala is near schools in Scottsdale Unified School District's Desert Mountain Learning Community: Anasazi Elementary, Mountainside Middle School and Desert Mountain High School. Confirm assigned schools for a specific address with the district.
What's nearby for dining, shopping and trails?
The Lost Dog Wash trailhead puts the McDowell Sonoran Preserve practically at your back door. Loop 101 makes it easy to reach Scottsdale Quarter, Kierland Commons, Mayo Clinic and the dining around North Scottsdale. DC Ranch and Silverleaf are also close.
Who is Ancala a good fit for?
Ancala fits buyers who want gated privacy and mountain views without being far from the rest of the Valley. Golfers like having a club inside the gates, families like the park and nearby Scottsdale Unified schools, and hikers love being next to the preserve.
